"As we approach the festive season, I would like to encourage residents and visitors to make Hailsham their destination for Christmas shopping, seasonal entertainment and spending time with family and friends.

Christmas is an important time for our town's businesses, and choosing to shop locally is one of the most effective ways we can support the people and independent enterprises that contribute so much to Hailsham's character. From specialist retailers and unique handmade gifts to familiar High Street names, our town has plenty to offer those looking for something special for their loved ones.

Whether you are searching for Christmas decorations, greeting cards, flowers, wreaths or a thoughtful, individual gift, Hailsham's shops provide a wealth of choice. Local hairdressers and beauty salons also offer seasonal treatments and gift packages, making it easy to find a present for someone who deserves a little extra indulgence. With free parking available in and around the town centre, visiting local businesses is both convenient and rewarding.

There is much more to enjoy beyond the shops. Hailsham’s cafés, restaurants, pubs and bars offer welcoming places to meet friends, enjoy a festive meal or take a break from the Christmas preparations. I hope residents will take every opportunity to discover what our town has to offer and encourage friends and family from further afield to do the same.

A highlight of the season will be Hailsham's Christmas Lights Switch-On on Friday 27th November, taking place in Vicarage Field and across the High Street from 1pm to 7pm. Organised by the Town Council in partnership with local community organisations, the event promises an enjoyable afternoon for all ages, with live entertainment, market stalls, festive refreshments, a visit from Santa and plenty of opportunities to browse the products of local businesses and independent makers.

The ceremonial switching-on of the Christmas lights will take place at 6pm, with actor Jonathan Linsley, known for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, pressing the button.

The market is now fully booked, with a wide selection of traders offering crafts, jewellery, clothing, homeware, seasonal decorations, handmade gifts, children's products and locally produced treats. Their participation reflects the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that make our local business community so special.

As Chair of the Communities Committee, I am delighted to see Hailsham preparing to welcome the festive season with such a varied programme of activities and opportunities for people to come together. Events such as the Christmas Lights Switch-On help create lasting memories, strengthen community connections and bring additional visitors into our town centre.

I would therefore urge everyone to make a conscious effort to support Hailsham's shops, cafés, restaurants and market traders over the coming weeks. Every local purchase helps sustain businesses, support jobs and contribute to a thriving town centre.

Let us make Christmas 2026 a memorable occasion for Hailsham by celebrating our community, supporting our local traders and enjoying all that our wonderful town has to offer."
