HERSTMONCEUX CASTLE ESTATE REWILDING event to celebrate the official launch of Herstmonceux Rewilding, marking the start of an ambitious new chapter in the estate’s history took place over two days in October.

The events brought together members of the local community, Queen’s University alumni, faculty and senior leaders, scientists, researchers, farmers, ecologists, and representatives of the nature restoration company Nattergal.

Together, they explored the estate’s future and opportunities to restore habitats, attract wildlife, and create new possibilities for scientific research, education, and community involvement.

VITALITY VILLAGES COMMUNITY ALLOTMENT project works three Community Allotments at the Parish Council Allotment site at Greenway Farm, Stunts Green. They meet on Wednesday and Friday mornings have about eight or nine regular helpers with Friday being the most popular morning.

It was very challenging in the summer heat and sometimes they had to cancel sessions as it was too hot to do anything, but the helpers were amazing at going early and late to water as much as possible. Their efforts ensured that there were potatoes, onions, garlic, beans, carrots, chard, tomatoes, many flowers, and wheat to be harvested.

Winter wheat was planted last November and spring wheat in April as part of the Seed to Sourdough Project led by Windmill Hill windmill. The grain was harvested in August and achieved 2.5 kilos of grain which was milled on the small electric mill at the windmill. Bread and rolls have been made with the flour which has been enjoyed by the volunteers at the allotment.

It was an interesting project across the local community and everyone involved felt that they had learnt a lot about the trials of growing wheat (weather, pigeons, mice, deer, squirrels), the time effort in picking and winnowing (separating the grain from the stalks), grinding it before you can even think about making bread.
