Local MP, Kieran Mullan visited Aldershaw Handmade Tiles in Sedlescombe last week to learn more about how the local business continues to completely handmake roof, floor and ceiling tiles using traditional methods and locally sourced Wealden clay.

During the visit, owner Tony Kindell showed Kieran around the manufacturing site, explaining the tile-making process and the history behind the business. Kieran also got hands-on with the clay and tried his hand at making a traditional roof tile.
Using Wadhurst clay from its own Sussex clay pit, Aldershaw Handmade Tiles produces tiles that are widely used in heritage and conservation projects across the UK and overseas. The company's products have been used on prestigious sites including the Queen's House at the Tower of London and the Real Tennis Court at Hampton Court Palace.
Kieran Mullan MP said: "It was fascinating to see the skill and craftsmanship that goes into every tile made here in Sedlescombe. Aldershaw is a fantastic example of a local business preserving traditional skills while making a national contribution to our architectural heritage.
"Small businesses like this are the backbone of our local economy and it's important that MPs champion them. Too often, firms face unnecessary regulatory burdens that make it harder for them to grow and focus on what they do best.
"It's remarkable that tiles made here in Sussex have been used on iconic buildings such as the Tower of London and Hampton Court. We are fortunate to have such a respected and successful manufacturer in our constituency."
Kieran thanked Tony and his team for their hospitality and praised their work in preserving traditional crafts while supporting jobs and investment in the local economy.
