On Thursday 15 October 8 of us started out from Barcombe Mills carpark over the old toll bridge and up the road to the old station buildings. We then took a footpath across fields to reach the old railway where the embankment was clearly visible.

We had a good view of Barcombe church through a gap in the hedge and shortly after doubled back over a small bridge to reach the churchyard where we paused to admire the view and noticed the names on the war memorial which suggested that several families had suffered multiple losses.
After walking through fields we reached the site of the old railway again, this time in a cutting, now covered in trees. We walked along it to the village of Barcombe Cross. The intrepid walkers declined to stop for a coffee break in the village and continued to the village hall along the road which fortunately had a pavement. We then struck off through fields and woods pausing for an al fresco coffee and banana stop by the river.

We admired the fortified barns at Banks Farm and continued to Anchor Lane where we turned towards the river near the Anchor pub.
We returned to Barcombe Mills via the old railway track. The walk along the river was impossible because the crucial bridge is currently closed awaiting repairs. Let’s hope that doesn’t take too long!
The walk was about 5 miles and the weather was warm and dry - if rather lacking in sunshine. The walk was led by Diana.
