Hayling Island Sailing Club (HISC) has officially welcomed an exciting new addition to its fleet, marking a new chapter in the club’s long history of enjoying life on the water. The club’s new Celtic Longboat, Valerie, was officially launched at a special celebration attended by club members, guests and representatives from local rowing clubs, many of whom arrived by water to join the festivities.

The occasion was particularly meaningful as the new boat has been named in honour of Valerie Catchpole, HISC’s first female Commodore. Members of Valerie’s family attended the launch, making it a fitting tribute to someone who played an important part in the club’s history.

Coastal Rowing has grown enormously in popularity around Chichester Harbour, with several clubs embracing the sport. Having seen the enthusiasm, friendships and community spirit that rowing has generated across the harbour, HISC was keen to become part of this growing activity.

Rowed by a crew of four, accompanied by a coxswain, the Celtic Longboat offers a wonderful combination of exercise, teamwork and enjoyment on the water. Whether it’s a leisurely social row around the harbour, an opportunity to improve fitness or the excitement of competitive racing, there is something to appeal to a wide range of interests and abilities. Importantly, no previous rowing experience is necessary. HISC will be introducing training courses to help members learn the skills and techniques needed to row safely and confidently, followed by opportunities to take part in regular social rowing and competitive events. Rowing Class Captain Kirsten Bithell commented: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Valerie to HISC. Naming her after our first female Commodore makes this particularly special, and it was wonderful to see so many local rowing clubs joining us for her launch. Rowing is a fantastic way to enjoy our beautiful harbour, meet new people and stay active. We hope Valerie will inspire even more of our members to discover the pleasure of coastal rowing and become part of our growing community"
While sailing remains at the heart of HISC, the arrival of Valerie reflects the club’s commitment to offering a diverse range of activities and opportunities for its members.
