People supported by Southdown’s learning disability services came together for a day of games, laughter and friendly competition at a special It’s a Knockout event on Tuesday 20 October. Hosted by Southdown’s Milchester supported living service at Downs Leisure Centre in Seaford, the event brought people together from across the Sussex housing, care and support provider‘s services, with support workers joining in the fun.

There were 10 games to choose from, with everyone encouraged to take part at their own pace, try something new and enjoy being part of a team. The day ended with a final challenge to win the event trophy, known as the GOAT (Greatest of All Time). The winning team, Fiveways/ Glebe, will keep the trophy at their service before passing it on to another team at a future gathering.
Community support makes it happen

Local businesses and individuals played a big part in making the event possible. Foam and Fabric in Seaford donated specially made foam pieces for a giant build-a-burger game, creating colourful pieces shaped like burger buns, cheese and lettuce. The shop sourced the materials and made and covered every piece free of charge. Sussex Football Association helped design the games and bring the event to life. Ian Palmer, who is involved in walking football at Downs Leisure Centre, donated equipment, while the leisure centre offered a discount on hall hire.
The idea came from Gemma Belsey, Milchester’s service manager, who worked with a small team of colleagues to organise the event in just 12 weeks. Gemma said, “The idea came from one of our clients after watching old TV reruns on YouTube. He brought the suggestion to a house meeting, and as a team we thought it was a fantastic idea. From the very beginning, we felt passionate about ensuring the event was accessible and inclusive. With the support of Jade from the Sussex Football Association and our incredible support workers, we pulled off a hugely successful event that created lasting memories for everyone involved.”
Michelle Harker, a support worker at Milchester, added: “It’s all about community, which has been amazing. We haven’t had a lot of funding, so having people give their time, skills and materials to help us has made such a difference. Everyone has been so supportive.”
A day to remember

Steve, who is supported by a nearby Southdown learning disability service, summed up the day when asked what he had enjoyed most. His answer was simple: “Everything!” Steve also spoke about how much he enjoyed getting out and about, capturing what the day was all about: having fun, trying activities and spending time together.
Southdown supports people with learning disabilities across Sussex through its care homes and supported living services. Its person-centred approach focuses on what matters to each person, helping them make choices, develop skills, build relationships and be part of their community.
