UCKFIELD RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB. URFC

Free Community Christmas Dinnerplaceholder image
Free Community Christmas Dinner | URFC

PLEASE SHARE: BOOKINGS ARE NOW OPEN for our URFC Christmas Day community lunch. Due to the exciting renovations happening at Uckfield Rugby Football Club and not currently having a kitchen to cook from, we had to have a rethink about how we could cook and deliver our community Christmas Day lunches.  We are hugely appreciative to Matt Ridley at The Highlands Inn, Uckfield, for so kindly agreeing to cook our meals this year. This comes as no surprise; Matt and his family are great supporters of our rugby club and already supports our local community so much throughout the year. What an incredible gesture.  If you or your neighbour or family member are on their own on Christmas Day this year, are elderly or vulnerable, then please do get in touch with us. Our URFC members and supporters will be delighted to deliver you a hot meal and some Christmas cheer. Here is one of the many messages that we received after last year's successful Christmas lunch: 'Please could you thank all involved for providing the Christmas lunch for my mum this year. I had to work for the NHS on Christmas day and I can't tell you the relief that there was, knowing someone was going to be bringing mum a Christmas lunch.  And what a lunch it was by all descriptions! She loved it! She also very much loved the chat with the family who delivered the meal, it quite made her day - and mine. We truly appreciated all the hard work that went into the organisation of the meals and the time people gave up on their Christmas day to spend with others. Thank you.'

UCKFIELD TOWN MAYOR

UCKFIELD TOWN MAYOR WITH CHRIS DOWLINGplaceholder image
UCKFIELD TOWN MAYOR WITH CHRIS DOWLING | UCKFIELD TOWN COUNCIL

I had the pleasure of speaking at the Uckfield Chamber of Commerce breakfast, and I’d like to thank everyone for the warm welcome and for taking the time to listen. When I became Mayor two and a half years ago, one of my key aims was to raise the profile of Uckfield Town Council, particularly within our local business community. This morning was a great opportunity to explain a little more about what the Town Council actually does, the role of the Mayor, what we have achieved, and—most importantly—how I hope the relationship between the Council and our business community continues to develop. I think there is sometimes a perception that the Town Council is simply about hanging baskets, Christmas lights and allotments! And yes, we do those things—but we are so much more than that. Uckfield Town Council is a £2 million-plus organisation, employing more than 30 people and managing a substantial portfolio of parks, recreation grounds, sports facilities, buildings, woodlands, nature reserves, allotments, community facilities and other town assets. We also generate around a third of our own income through activities such as facility hire, events, property and Luxford Restaurant with that income being reinvested back into Uckfield for the benefit of our community.

But one of the biggest messages I wanted to get across today was that the Town Council and our business community need each other. Businesses create jobs, attract people into Uckfield, invest locally and help give our town its character. We want Uckfield to be a great place to live, work, visit and do business. That means listening to businesses, understanding the challenges they face, working together and making sure Uckfield's voice is heard. Being Mayor has also taught me just how important relationships and networking are. The Mayoral chain might open a few doors, but the real value of the role is the opportunity to bring people together, listen, build relationships and promote our wonderful town. As I approach the end of my three-year term, I am incredibly proud of the people I have met and the organisations I have visited. I have seen first-hand the enormous number of people who quietly work every day to make Uckfield a better place—businesses, volunteers, council staff, councillors, community groups and residents. I also spoke this morning about my two Mayoral charities, PHAB and EGFR-positive lung cancer, and the fundraising we are doing throughout the year. I would love to see local businesses, residents, charities and community organisations come together for my Mayoral End of Term Party on 8 May, where we will celebrate the end of the Mayoral year and present the money raised to the two charities. If any local businesses would be willing to sponsor or support the event, I would be delighted to hear from you. Please speak to me directly or contact [email protected]. Finally, thank you again to the Uckfield Chamber of Commerce for inviting me this morning, and thank you to everyone who contributes to making Uckfield the special place it is. It has been a privilege to serve as Mayor. As I prepare to hand over the chain, I hope I have helped to raise the profile of our Town Council and strengthen its relationship with the business community—and I hope the next Mayor will pick up that baton and continue the work. Because ultimately, we all want the same thing: A successful, vibrant and confident Uckfield.
