To inspire gardeners from across Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire, Redrow Southern Counties have shared their top tips for getting creative in the garden this summer.

  • Create zones within your garden space: Zone areas in your garden for entertaining, dining and cooking. Use different materials like paving, stone or grass to mark out the areas; or create the illusion of multiple rooms with furnishings, collections of clay and ceramic planters, or screening plants.
  • Add a pop of colour to your fence: A simple yet effective way to refresh your garden is by adding a splash of colour to your fence. A fresh coat of paint instantly brightens the space and makes your plants pop. By painting your fences now, you can enjoy a colourful garden all summer long.
  • Add bird baths to encourage wildlife: By adding a bird bath, such as a large saucer placed on a garden table, to your garden now, you’ll encourage more wildlife to your space. Bird baths not only help keep animals hydrated but also add a calming, natural feature that enhances the overall atmosphere of your garden.
  • Indulge in roses and butterfly bushes: Choose single-flowering varieties like Morning Mist, Night Owl, or Mutabilis for a beautiful range of colours. Also, consider adding buddleia to your garden — it’s a vibrant choice for attracting butterflies and provides a pollinator-friendly addition to your outdoor space.
  • Design your own Alfresco living space:If you’re an avid cook, or hoping to win the pizza oven, then consider a kitchen garden that incorporates herbs, edimentals or vegetables. You could even do this vertically, with both tomatoes and strawberries known to thrive in hanging baskets.

Mark Vanson, Sales Director at Redrow Southern Counties, comments: “Gardens have consistently been one of the ‘must have’ features for homebuyers over the last 50 years. Although traditionally gardens were thought of very separately to the home, we’re seeing more and more homebuyers looking for a seamless flow of their style from indoor to outdoor, and instead using their garden as an expansion of their entertaining zone.

“As the days get longer and we spend more time outside, a new pizza oven would be the perfect addition to an outdoor dining space for any homeowner in the Southern Counties. We encourage all green fingered gardeners to enter the competition, or if you’re just getting started with your gardening process then stop by our show homes for some outdoor inspiration!”
