This week, it was announced that people living near the site of the Battle of Hastings would have a ‘priority sales window’ to order tickets for the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum.

Tickets to see the medieval masterpiece in Britain have been in high demand. The first release on 1 July 2026 sold out the same day, with 100,000 tickets gone in 24 hours and queues exceeding 80,000 people.
As the latest tranche of tickets became available on Wednesday (October 21), the British Museum said residents of Bosham would not have the same priority access to tickets as those living in 1066 County.
This is despite the village featuring prominently in the tapestry, as Harold Godwinson is shown arriving in the village, entering the church with a companion, before feasting at his manor house and departing down the Bosham Channel for Normandy.
The manor itself no longer survives, but archaeologists have re‑examined evidence first uncovered in 2006 and now believe they have identified Harold’s residence.
Bosham’s presence in the tapestry places the parish at the threshold of one of the most consequential journeys in English history: the moment Harold leaves home, and the narrative of 1066 begins to unfold.
This, however, was not enough to persuade the British Museum to offer residents the same access to the exhibition as those in Hastings.
The Museum says that the next ticket release will be in the New Year.
