City landlords offer 14 homes for Syrian refugee families

Refugees are expected to arrive in the UK 'within days'.

Following the council's plea for private landlords to come forward to help find a home for Syrian refugees, 14 properties have been identified in Brighton and Hove.

The city council, which has agreed to take in at least five Syrian refugee families, said it could support more, if it can identify enough homes and secure extra government funding.

Emma Daniel, Labour and Co-operative councillor for Hanover and and Elm Grove, said it was 'really wonderful' that landlords had responded to the call, and it means refugee families will not be placed in council houses, which may have caused 'tensions' with those on waiting lists.

She said many refugees arriving in the UK will women, children, orphans, and those with severe health issues, and said they will need support. Cllr Daniel asked anyone who was considering fostering in Brighton and Hove to get in touch with the council.

Refugees are expected to arrive in the UK 'within days', but it is unclear whether these families will come to Brighton.
