Developers want to put up to seven homes, together with a replacement dwelling with access and parking on land to the rear of the gardens of Castlemaine Care Home in Avondale Road.

A similar application was refused planning permission by Hastings Borough Council in March this year.

Councillors Rob Lee and Cllr Andy Patmore, the ward councillors for the area, have been speaking to residents about the plans and hearing objections to it.

Cllr Lee said: “The proposed development is clearly too big for the site and needs rethinking.”

Cllr Patmore said: “This is not the suitable place for this kind of development we need to move away from these insensitive schemes.”

Dr Willliam Morden said: “I am strongly opposed to these plans. Avondale Road is a quiet and unspoiled residential road. It should remain so.”

Susan Bell said: “The traffic going in both directions along The Green and Sedlescombe Road South is heavily congested with lorries, buses and cars which makes entry into and out of Avondale Road very difficult most times of the day. Surely in such a small residential area we do not need more traffic, more cars up and down, also the road is used as a short cut for the school children I’m sure they could do without having to breath in more car fumes, and watch out for cars.”

Town and Country Planning Solutions, agents for the applicants, said in a report: “When determining the previous planning application, the council was satisfied that residential development could be achieved on the site in principle and that the proposal would not result in any significant visual harm or adverse impact upon residential amenities.”

The application will be discussed by the council’s planning committee at a future date.
