Horsham dog lover ready to fly the flag for Great Britain at sled dog world championships

Two-time World Championship bronze medallist Kim Godfrey is preparing to represent Great Britain again this November, taking a three-dog Greenland Dog team from Horsham to the WSA Dryland World Championships in Strohen, Germany.

Kim, who won a medal for Britain in the World Sled Dog Association International Dryland Championship in 2024, will compete from November 20 to 22 in the four-dog Freight category – despite lining up with only three dogs.

The team brings together two experienced world medallists and an exciting newcomer.

Wolverine (Wolvey) is a five-year-old British-bred male and two-time World Championship bronze medallist. Strike, a three-year-old female, has one World Championship bronze medal, while Namora, at just 15 months old, will be competing in her first racing season and making her first World Championship attempt.

Kim’s fourth Greenland Dog, Hugh, is still too young to compete. Although borrowing a fourth dog was considered, no suitably prepared dog was available, so Kim made the decision to race three rather than compromise on preparation or welfare.

Kim said: “Wolvey has stood on both World Championship podiums with me and Strike already has a world bronze of her own, but for Namora everything will be completely new.

“She’ll only be 15 months old and in her first racing season, so I’m incredibly excited to see what she can do. We’ll be racing three dogs in a category that allows four, but I’d much rather arrive with three dogs who are fit, happy and ready to race.”

Preparation has also been complicated by problems with Kim’s 2008 Volkswagen Crafter, which is specially set up to transport the dogs safely to training and competitions. A major cooling-system failure at the end of August resulted in recovery home and substantial repairs just months before the journey to Germany.

Reliable transport is particularly important in dryland sled dog racing, where teams travel long distances with dogs, racing equipment and specialist kit to reach events across the UK and Europe.

Kim added: “Getting to the start line is an adventure in itself sometimes! But representing Great Britain at a World Championship is incredibly special. I’ve been fortunate enough to stand on that podium twice, and I’m very proud to be going back with my dogs and representing both Britain and the Greenland Dog breed.”

Kim is a British champion and consistent top-three UK competitor as well as a two-time world bronze medallist. Her teams combine rare Greenland Dogs with former rescue and street dogs, and her Greenland Dogs have also enjoyed success at Crufts.

The team will continue training in the UK throughout the autumn before travelling to Germany in November.
