Brighton make shock Evan Ferguson call just days after transfer window shuts

All the latest team and injury news for Brighton and Hove Albion and across the Premier League

Brighton have included striker Evan Ferguson in their Uefa Conference League squad.

The Ireland international striker was widely tipped to leave in the summer transfer window with Italian club Genoa close to securing a deal.

The move though failed to materialise and Ferguson, 21, was among the names Brighton submitted to Uefa for their Conference League campaign that gets underway in October.

Ferguson is currently sidelined with ankle injury sustained last season while on loan at Roma.

It's been more than 20 months since Ferguson appeared in an Albion shirt but head coach Fabian Hurzeler insists he is "getting closer."

Ferguson remains injured

Brighton's other injured players, such as Kaoru Mintoma and Yankuba Minteh, were not included in the squad for the league stages of Albion's European competition.

"He [Ferguson] is getting closer," said Hurzeler when asked for an update prior to the Leeds match.

"He's doing his rehab, but I can't give a clear time schedule when he will be back."

Ferguson quickly made an impact at Brighton but his early promise waned as injuries, loss of form and fitness concerns hindered his progress.

He an unsuccessful loan at West Ham, while at Roma he showed encouraging signs until the ankle injury.

Ferguson is one of the best in Premier League

Hurzeler added: "But everyone knows what Evan is capable of doing.

"He proved it for a few years here in Brighton. I think he was one of the best strikers in the Premier League.

"So hopefully he can get back on track. Hopefully he gets his mind in the right position.

"I think that's the key, after these kind of injuries you get back on track and that you have the biggest trust in your own body.

"Only if you feel really safe and trust in your own body, then you're capable of playing on the highest level.

"So that's the main focus now and then let's see what happens."

Ferguson joined Brighton in 2022 from Bohemians and has made 80 appearances for the Seagulls with 17 goals and six assists. His is contract to the club until 2029.
