'He's everywhere' - Brighton vs Leeds United player ratings as brilliant midfielder dazzles and £50m man strikes
Brighton 1-1 Leeds United in the Premier League from the Amex Stadium
How dare Leeds come down here and bully Brighton's expensively assembled data-driven youngsters.
This was a tough first half lesson for Albion, who allowed a number of battle-hardened and experienced Premier League players exit this summer. But the young Seagulls learnt quickly and there was much to like about an intense second half display - especially from emerging midfielder Malick Yalcouye.
Jayden Bogle deservedly gave the visitors the lead on 15 minutes. Dominic Calvert-Lewin's header was pushed away by Bart Verbruggen the ball was fizzed back across goal and Bogle was at the far post to tap home.
It was all Leeds and Albion skipper Lewis Dunk prevented further damage as he raced back to clear Calvert-Lewin's effort off the line after the lively Leeds attacker had rounded Verbruggen.
Leeds powered forward after the break too. Verbruggen was at his best to thwart Anton Stach with an out-stretched leg and then Tanaka had a good disallowed by the narrowest of margins after a set-piece routine. Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler could only shake his head.
Brighton finally arose from their slumber. Ferdi Kadioglu had one effort from the edge of the box saved by James Trafford and Pascal Gross placed another just wide.
Step forward Albion's record £50m man. The Croatian rose at the back post on 71 minutes and planted home a header from De Cuyper's corner. His first goal in an Albion shirt.
Brighton then should have won the match as substitute Promise David and Gross both missed golden opportunities.
How Brighton rated...
Bart Verbruggen - 6
Made the initial save to keep out DCL's header but was stranded on the floor as the played was played across for Bogle to finish. Did very well to deny Stach after the break with a save with his feet.
Ferdi Kadioglu - 5
A little off the pace in the first half and lacked the intensity usually associated with his game. Replaced by Costinha.
Luka Vuskovic - 8
The £50m is off the mark with a nice far post header to level the scores. He enjoyed his celebration with the fans behind the goal. He took an early elbow to the face from DCL as the Leeds centre forward tried to make it a physical battle.
Lewis Dunk - 7
A vital goal-line clearance on 24 minutes to prevent Brighton going 2-0 down. Sound display from the skipper.
Olivier Boscagli - 7
Played at left back and did pretty well. One lovely long pass teed-up Gomez for a far post volley. Albion's best moment of a poor first half. His left foot delivery is top notch.
Pascal Gross - 6
You know it's a bad day for Brighton when Gross starts mis-placing passes. A rare off day for the German. Had a great chance at the end to to net the winner but blazed over.
Yasin Ayari - 7
Struggled to stamp his mark on the match as the physicality and directness of Leeds caused midfield issues for Brighton. Much better in the second half and forced a low save from Trafford in the 80th minutes.
Diego Gomez - 6
Stung the palms of Trafford with a powerful near-post volley after Boscagli's excellent pass. Much more to come from Gomez has not really hit his peak this season as yet.
Malick Yalcouye - 8
He was everywhere in the second half. Improved after the break and dropped a little deeper to link the play. Some really impressive stuff from the young midfielder. Brighton have a very good player here!
Maxim De Cuyper - 6
Booked for pulling back Bogle on 49. The Belgian then provided an assist with his corner for Vuskovic's header. Replaced by David on 77 minutes.
Charalampos Kostoulas - 8
I really liked his performance. Fully committed and tried to spark a very flat Albion to life. Held the ball up well too. Created one good chance for himself but his finish just lacked power. received very little service.
Substitutes: Struijk (Boscagli, 93), Costinha (Kadioglu, 73), David (De Cuyper, 77).
