Gary Lineker makes bold Fabian Hurzeler prediction amid Brighton praise and Manchester United link

Gary Lineker believes Fabian Hurzeler has the potential to become one of the world’s leading coaches.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the ex-Barcelona, Leicester and Tottenham striker praised Albion’s manager and the club’s recruitment structure during a discussion of their 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

Lineker, who recently interviewed Hurzeler, said the Brighton boss had impressed him with both his tactical understanding and the way he carried himself.

“I was very impressed with the way he spoke, and his confidence without being arrogant,” he said.

The former England striker believes Hurzeler, 33, could eventually establish himself among the game’s elite managers.

“I think he’s got the potential to be one of the absolutely top coaches in world football,” Lineker said.

However, he also stressed the importance of the structure supporting the head coach, highlighting Brighton’s approach to recruitment and their use of data.

Lineker described recruitment as the most important aspect of football, arguing that clubs give themselves the best chance of success by spending their budgets wisely.

He believes Hürzeler’s work benefits considerably from the way Albion operate, with the club providing an environment in which a talented coach can flourish.

Former Manchester City full-back Micah Richards was similarly impressed, after watching a documentary about Brighton’s training ground – and the pathway between their youth teams and first-team squad.

Richards said Albion ‘absolutely’ can turn their form into a Champions League challenge.

However, he was more cautious about the prospect of a Premier League title challenge, pointing to the additional demands of European football.

“I think Champions League football is a realistic target for them – I don’t think [they are] winning the league.”

All-time leading Premier League goalscorer Alan Shearer also praised Hurzeler, highlighting the range of skills required to succeed in modern management.

The former Newcastle striker said the role extended far beyond organising training sessions and choosing a team, with coaches also needing to manage personalities, maintain confidence and handle media scrutiny.

For Shearer, Hurzeler’s ability to cope with those responsibilities at such a young age made his work particularly impressive.

The discussion also turned to a hypothetical move to Manchester United, with Lineker questioning whether leaving Brighton’s established structure would necessarily be the right step.

Graham Potter’s departure for Chelsea was raised, by Shearer, as an example of the difficulties a successful Albion coach can encounter elsewhere.

For now, the panel’s assessment offered a strong endorsement of both Hurzeler and the club around him.
