'Wanted by all the top clubs' - Manchester United wonderkid asks to leave ahead of Brighton clash

Manchester United's plans for their Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton have been disrupted, after teenage sensation JJ Gabriel asked to leave the club.

The highly-rated 15-year-old had been expected to be in the squad against the Seagulls, at Old Trafford, on Wednesday night (September 16). If he took to the pitch, he would have become the club's youngest ever player.

However, as reported by Manchester Evening News, Gabriel will no longer be included in the squad to face Brighton after he decided not to train on Tuesday.

Times Sport broke the news that Gabriel formally asked for his registration to be cancelled with immediate effect.

The reasons behind the request have not been fully outlined, although it is understood there are issues between Gabriel’s family and United.

The club have reportedly not given up hope of resolving the situation, with Gabriel's current contract running until the end of the season.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter): ”JJ Gabriel has formally asked to leave Manchester United by terminating his contract.

“Fifteen-year-old wonderkid, wanted by all the top clubs in the world – not only in England.”

Who is JJ Gabriel?

The London-born forward has rapidly emerged as one of the club's most exciting academy prospects.

Despite being just 14 when last season began, Gabriel was named both Premier League Under-18 Player of the Year and United's Under-18 Player of the Year.

He scored twice on his Under-18 debut and helped United reach the FA Youth Cup and Premier League Under-18 finals.

Gabriel stepped up to Premier League 2 this season and made his senior debut against Atletico Madrid during pre-season.

He then scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut last week, further raising expectations that he would feature against Brighton. He had also been training with the first team.

Whether Gabriel remains at Old Trafford beyond the current season is now uncertain, with United working to resolve the situation before his expected competitive debut.
