First-ever performance at The Hawth for Ariel’s Othellos Plus
November 1
Ariel’s Othellos Plus is celebrating an exciting new chapter in inclusive performing arts with its first-ever performance at The Hawth Theatre, Crawley on November 1 and a call for new students aged 16 and over to join the group.
Ariel’s Othellos Plus is an inclusive performing arts programme designed for young people and adults aged 19 and over with learning disabilities. The programme provides a welcoming, supportive environment where participants can develop confidence, build friendships and enjoy the benefits of singing, dance and drama.
Sessions take place at Eastbrook Manor Community Centre in Brighton, which has recently been awarded a £1.2 million refurbishment grant to upgrade its facilities, improve accessibility and support a wide range of community activities.
A major milestone for Othellos Plus will come on November 1 when the group takes to the stage at The Hawth Theatre in Crawley for the very first time. The performance will form part of a special showcase bringing together all of Ariel’s Othellos groups for a “joyful celebration of singing, dance and drama, highlighting the creativity, talent and individuality of every performer.”
Matt Godfrey, Othellos development officer, said: “Following this exciting debut, Othellos Plus will be welcoming new students aged 16 and over from the following week, offering more young people and adults with learning disabilities the opportunity to experience the joy of performing arts, develop new skills, build friendships and become part of a supportive, inclusive community.
“There was no provision for young people with learning disabilities to continue with the performing arts as they leave schools and colleges. It is so important for them to feel a sense of community and belonging.
“Ariel Drama Academies, which organise the programme, are also calling for volunteers from the local community to get involved. Volunteers play a valuable role in supporting sessions, encouraging participants and helping to create a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels included.
“No previous performing arts experience is necessary. Ariel is looking for enthusiastic, patient and supportive volunteers who would like to make a positive difference in the lives of young people and adults with learning disabilities.
“The launch of Othellos Plus reflects Ariel’s ongoing commitment to making performing arts accessible and ensuring that opportunities for creative expression, friendship and personal development continue beyond school and college.”
New students aged 16 and over and volunteers are invited to register their interest. To find out more about joining Othellos Plus or volunteering, contact [email protected]
