Crawley pet lover is the top dog at national business awards

Crawley pet care business owner James Callow has plenty to celebrate after being named one of the winners of the prestigious Great British Franchisee Awards (GBFA) – just three years after swapping a 20-year career in estate agency for a life surrounded by four-legged friends.

Since launching Petpals in Crawley in February 2023, James has become a familiar and reassuring presence for pet owners across the town and surrounding areas, including Copthorne, Crawley Down and Turner’s Hill. What started as a one-man operation has grown into a much-loved local service, with team member Denise Tilbury now helping him keep tails wagging.

“I’m absolutely over the moon,” said James. “When I left estate agency, I knew I wanted to do something I genuinely loved, but I never imagined I’d be winning a national award just a few years later. It’s been hard work, but getting to spend my days with animals and knowing I’m making a difference to local families makes it all worthwhile.”

Through his business, James offers a range of professional pet care services – from dog walking and cat visits to pet sitting. Whether owners are heading off to work, enjoying a holiday or simply need an extra helping hand, he and Denise provide peace of mind that their much-loved pets are happy, safe and well looked after.

James’s commitment to his local community extends beyond caring for its four-legged residents. He has also supported clean-up efforts at Buchan Country Park, helping to look after the green spaces enjoyed by dogs, walkers and families alike.

“We’re lucky to have such lovely places to walk our dogs around Crawley and I think it’s important to do our bit to look after them,” James explained. “It’s a small way of giving something back to the community that’s been so supportive of us.”

The judging panel praised James for his outstanding customer feedback, loyal client base and dedication to providing the highest standards of pet care. They also recognised his willingness to share his knowledge and experience with fellow business owners, helping him stand out from the crowd.

But for James, the award is as much a celebration of the people who have supported him along the way as it is of his own achievements.

“Some of our clients have been with us since the very beginning, and their pets really do feel like part of the family,” he added. “I’m so grateful to everyone who’s trusted us with their animals and recommended us to friends and neighbours. And of course, a huge thank you to Denise, who’s been brilliant. This award means the world and I’m excited for what comes next.”
