The West Sussex, Brighton & Hove Careers Hub is promoting a free Green Careers Month toolkit throughout November, providing schools with resources to help students explore careers linked to sustainability, clean energy and the environment.

The toolkit aims to help schools incorporate green careers into assemblies, lessons and encounters with employers, raising awareness of the opportunities available across a wide range of industries.

Cllr McCabe, who has a professional background in construction and vocational training, said:

"One of the most exciting things about tackling climate change is the opportunity to create skilled, well-paid jobs for the next generation.

"I'm delighted to see the Careers Hub helping schools introduce young people to the opportunities available in the green economy.

"But we need to make sure these opportunities are open to everyone, not just those planning to go to university.

"We're going to need electricians, plumbers, engineers, construction workers, technicians and apprentices to help deliver cleaner energy, more energy-efficient homes and the infrastructure of the future.

"Having worked in construction and vocational training myself, I know how important practical skills are, and how rewarding these careers can be.

"Young people should be able to see a clear pathway from the classroom into a good job, whether that's through an apprenticeship, technical qualification or university degree."

Cllr McCabe also called for stronger links between schools, colleges and local employers to help young people understand the opportunities available close to home.

He added: "West Sussex has enormous potential to benefit from the transition to a greener economy, but we need to make sure local young people have the skills and opportunities to be part of it.

"Climate action isn't just about protecting our environment. It's also about creating opportunities, supporting local businesses and building a stronger economy for the future.

"I'd encourage schools across West Sussex to make use of this toolkit and help inspire the next generation."

The Green Careers Month initiative is being promoted through the West Sussex County Council schools website.
