Burgess Hill teenager wins national filmmaking competition with an emotional message to her future self
Caitlin, a young filmmaker, 18, from Burgess Hill, has been named winner of the 12 and over category in a national filmmaking competition run by the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA).
The 'Dear Future Self' challenge invited young people aged 18 and under across the UK to create a short film exploring what they would want themselves, ten years from now, to remember about who they are today.
Caitlin, who attends PQA Haywards Heath, took the 12-and-over title with her film ‘You Are Not Alone’. In it, she reminds her future self that she is loved and cherished by the people around her, including her friends and family, who want to see her shine, as well as her PQA family, where she is valued.
Whatever happens, and however tough things get, the film reminds her that there will always be someone there waiting for her.

Speaking about her win, Caitlin said: “I am over the moon to have even been nominated for this award, and so proud to be surrounded by such talented people throughout PQA nationally.
"No matter which academy, we are all one family.
"Although the film is a message to myself, and is born of previous experience, it is so nice to know that it may be an inspiration to others who sometimes need reminding they are not alone.”
Florence Tingley, Principal at PQA Haywards Heath, said: "It is a real privilege to see Caitlin receive this national recognition. This award is a true reflection of her exceptional talent, creativity and dedication, but also of the determination and passion she has shown throughout her filmmaking journey.
"As Principal, I am incredibly proud of what she has achieved. Her success is thoroughly deserved and a wonderful reminder of what can be accomplished when talent is matched by hard work, ambition and a belief in your own ideas.
"Caitlin should be immensely proud of this achievement, I certainly am."
The judging panel praised the creativity and thoughtfulness of her entry, with Caitlin's film standing out for its warmth and its honest, generous message.
One of the competition judges, Nick Pilton, Head of Film & TV, said: "Caitlin’s film really moved me, there is a real skill in making something so personal feel like it's speaking to everyone watching.
"The judges were blown away by how thoughtfully young filmmakers across the country rose to the brief. We can't wait to see Caitlin's film on the big screen in November."
As her prize, Caitlin received an £150 voucher of her choice, and her film will be screened at the PQA Film Festival 2026, taking place in London on November 15 and Sheffield on November 29, where the winning and runner-up filmmakers will receive their awards and prizes.
