Eastergate war memorial believed to be have been damaged by vehicles, residents say
Concerns have been raised about damage to a historic war memorial in Eastergate, with claims that the site is now attracting anti-social behaviour.
A resident contacted the Chichester Observer to report damage to the Eastergate war memorial roundabout, saying they believe it to have been caused by vehicles. They also expressed worry about anti-social behaviour in the area.
The memorial commemorates local soldiers who died in the First and Second World Wars, having been built in 1920. It originally stood on a green, which is now the roundabout at the junction of the A29 and B2233.
In 2017, the War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £6,650 towards conservation work on the site.

West Sussex County Council said it is aware of the damage and is considering how the roundabout could be changed to provide a more robust long-term solution.
A spokesperson for West Sussex Highways said: “We are aware of the damage to this roundabout and are currently exploring further changes or a more robust solution to this issue.
“However, should this not be feasible we will instruct our contractors to make the repair.
“Unfortunately due to the existing layout this damage is likely to happen again, which is why West Sussex County Council are looking at other options in discussions with the local parish.”
The council did not comment on the claims of anti-social behaviour.
