Hovey’s side did their bit by comfortably beating West Chiltington by seven wickets but Roffey won by 21 runs and claimed the title, finishing ten points clear.

But despite not winning the title, Hovey was positive about the season. "Overall, we have had a very enjoyable and successful season at Middleton,” he said.

"We have a very young squad, and I have been really pleased with the way the players have developed and competed throughout the season. There is a lot of potential within the group, and I am excited to see how much further they can progress.

“I am looking forward to returning next season and hopefully going one better in the league. We have continued to perform strongly in the cup competitions as well, and we will be looking to build on that success and challenge again in both the T20 Cup and National Cup next year.

"It has been a great season of cricket, and I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts throughout the year. I am already looking forward to next season and hopefully another successful campaign.”

And on the final day win, he said: “From our perspective, the season finished in great fashion with a comfortable victory over an excellent West Chiltington side.

"They have been a fantastic addition to the league this season and have played some very good cricket throughout the year. They should be extremely proud of their efforts, particularly given the quality of cricket they have produced in their first season.”

And Hovey was full of praise for Roffey, who secured their seventh title in 13 seasons, and batsman Matt Davies, who was their talisman with 902 runs as an average of 64.85 through the season.

“I would like to congratulate Roffey on winning the league,” said Hovey. “They have had an excellent season and thoroughly deserve the title. They have been very consistent throughout the year and it is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved with the club.

“I would also like to congratulate Matt Davies on yet another outstanding season. He seems to get better every year and his ability to consistently score runs has been a huge part of Roffey’s success. He is an excellent player and it is great to see him continuing to perform at such a high level.”
