'Very painful' - Two more Brighton injuries confirmed ahead of Manchester City
Carabao Cup fourth round: Manchester City vs Brighton and Hove Albion from the Etihad Stadium - Wednesday, 7.45pm
Brighton will likely be without two key players for the Carabao Cup fourth round clash at Manchester City.
Chema Andres and Ferdi Kadioglu both sustained hip injuries during the 2-0 loss at Liverpool and head coach Fabian Hurzeler said they have to “manage the pain.”
Hurzeler also said the duo may not be able to train with the group today ahead of the trip to Manchester. It’s unlikely the duo will be risked in the Carabao Cup ahead of Saturday’s Premier League encounter - also at Manchester City.
“It's just a hit on the hips,” said Hurzeler. “Of course, it's very painful, so it's something where both players have to deal with the pain.
“Pain for every player feels differently, so we have to see how they train today, if it's possible, if they can train
“If yes then of course there will be an option for tomorrow but they definitely should be both available for the weekend.”
Minteh and Wieffer update
There was however more positive news on the injury front as Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer are nearing a return. Wieffer has not featured since his knee injury in the 4-3 loss at Chelsea, while Minteh is yet to play this term after a leg injury in the pre-season friendly win against Roma.
“Yes, we try to take them, tomorrow we try to take them to Manchester,” said Hurzeler.
“We're all looking forward to having these players back because before the injury they were big players for us, they were very helpful.
“Of course, the team is playing very well so we raised the standards, it also means that the players who came back or will come back have to raise the standards but that's only positive for our culture.”
Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring), Evan Ferguson (ankle), Stefanos Tzimas (knee), Femi Azeez (strain), Zadok Yohanna (fitness) remain on the sidelines.
Michael Svoboda missed the matchday squad at Liverpool but will be available to face Manchester City.
Brighton progressed to the fourth round thanks to their 3-2 comeback win at Manchester United and another win in Manchester against City at the Etihad will see Albion advance to the quarter-finals.
“We try to,” said Hurzeler. “Of course the draws at the moment do not help us but if you want to achieve something you have to compete with the best teams.
”We had a good experience in Manchester before, hopefully we can have another great night in Manchester tomorrow and that's what we are trying to aim for.
“Of course, we know that City, maybe the best team in the league at the moment. It is another tough challenge for us but we were ready for that and we are going there to get in the next round.”
