Greene King pubs announces the return of The Big Christmas Shift, offering thousands of meals to shift workers on Christmas Day, by hosting a nationwide celebration from December 2nd to December 5th

Christmas may be a day off for most of Britain, but for more than a million workers the celebrations must fit around the day job.
New research commissioned by Greene King pubs among 1,000 UK adults who have worked on Christmas Day or are planning to work this year, reveals the sacrifices being made by those keeping Britain running on December 25th.
58% of shift workers in the South East say that people underestimate just how many workers it takes to keep essential services running on Christmas Day, while 74% have felt guilty about working because of commitments to family and friends.
To recognise the people behind Britain’s Christmas celebrations, Greene King pubs is bringing back The Big Christmas Shift, offering 30,000 free festive meals in early December to people working on Christmas Day this year.
Taking place from Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5th December 2026, the nationwide celebration will give Christmas Day workers the chance to enjoy some festive time of their own ahead of their shifts.
As millions prepare to sacrifice their own celebrations to work this Christmas Day, Greene Santa returns and is coming clean in a new confessional film, admitting he’s been taking more than his fair share of the credit for making the magic happen.
Christmas around the clock
The research shows just how much Christmas traditions have to flex around work, with festive celebrations frequently moved, delayed or squeezed in around shifts:
45% have moved Christmas dinner to another day because of work
37% have rearranged when they see extended family
31% have moved opening presents to another day - with 6% even opening presents before 6am to fit around their shift
30% have eaten Christmas dinner late in the evening, with a further 22% eating it at work
And for many, working Christmas Day is far from a one-off. The average person surveyed has worked more than six Christmas Days, while half have worked at least three Christmas Days consecutively.
The moments that make a Christmas shift worthwhile
Despite the sacrifices, the research also reveals the moments of connection that can make working Christmas Day special: 30% have seen someone's mood improve because of something they did while working and 27% have helped someone who would otherwise have spent Christmas alone.
Workers also recalled unexpected gestures of thanks from the people they serve, including festive food, flowers, handwritten notes – with some workers even being included in other families’ traditions.
Andrew Gallagher, Brand and Marketing Director at Greene King pubs, said: “The magic of Christmas doesn’t just happen. Behind so many special moments that the rest of us enjoy, there are people giving up time with their loved ones to make Christmas special for somebody else.
“So, this year, we are giving Santa a little less of the credit and putting the spotlight on Britain’s real Christmas shift workers. Offering 30,000 free meals is our way of saying thank you to every person behind the scenes and giving them a chance to enjoy some well-earned festive cheer of their own.”
30,000 free festive meals
Christmas Day workers have until 16th November to register themselves and a fellow shift worker for The Big Christmas Shift.
Eligible workers can claim their free festive meal from Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5th December 2026, at participating Greene King pubs via www.greeneking.co.uk/christmas/big-christmas-shift or alternatively you can nominate a Christmas Day hero of your own for some well-earned festive recognition.
Blue Light Card (BLC) and Macmillan are proudly supporting the initiative, with over 10,000 of the 30,000 meals reserved exclusively for BLC members.
