In a world where art works sell for astronomical sums, those who choose to profit by illegal means spike our curiosity, we will look at thieves, forgers and dealers, and at how and why they made their choices. Was it always about money? Or something else? We focus on one particular art thief, his actions, motives and denouement.” We welcome guests to individual lectures for £7.50 (Membership £50) If you would like to try us, you can come to your first lecture free of charge! Our nationally accredited speakers are experts in their field, and we have a diverse programme covering fine and decorative arts as well as architecture, design, photography and much more. Making the most of the excellent acoustics in All Saints Church, Waldron, on Saturday 24th October a group of three musicians (‘Faronel’) specialising in mediaeval music – David Force, Ruth Force and Michael Withers - used period-style instruments to celebrate 13th - 15th century pilgrimages. The fifteen songs, including the Battle Abbey Carol (‘Be Mery All’), would have been known to pilgrims walking and riding The Old Way, their route from Winchester to Battle, or even Il Camino de Santiago. The significance of the songs was explained in a commentary by Dorothy Withers that touched on Chaucer, Thomas à Becket, contemporaneous composers and much else during a most polished and enlightening evening. If you would like to arrange a similar event, have a look at the website www.faronel.co.uk
